Is Ölüdeniz Paragliding Safe?
Short answer: yes — when you fly with a licensed, certified operator. Long answer: read below. We're transparent about every aspect of flight safety because your life literally depends on it.
Tandem paragliding in Ölüdeniz has an outstanding safety record. Over 100,000 tandem flights are completed from Babadağ Mountain every year, and the Turkish Aeronautical Association (THK) supervises all operations. However, safety depends entirely on who you fly with. An unlicensed pilot with unchecked equipment is exponentially more dangerous than the activity itself.
At SkyHigh, we go far beyond the legal minimum. Below is a complete, technical breakdown of our safety infrastructure — the same information we'd give to a government auditor. If another operator in Fethiye can't provide this level of transparency, that tells you something.
Pilot Certifications & Licensing
Every SkyHigh pilot meets or exceeds these requirements — verified annually.
THK T2 Advanced Tandem License
The Turkish Aeronautical Association (Türk Hava Kurumu) issues pilot licenses in tiers: T1 (Solo), T2 (Tandem), and Instructor. A T2 license requires: 500+ solo hours, 200+ tandem hours under supervision, and passing both written and practical exams in meteorology, aerodynamics, and emergency procedures. All SkyHigh pilots hold T2 or higher — with a minimum of 1,500 tandem hours.
SIV Emergency Training
SIV (Simulation d'Incidents en Vol) is an international emergency maneuver training program conducted over water. Pilots deliberately induce wing collapses, stalls, and spins — then recover. SkyHigh mandates annual SIV re-certification for all tandem pilots. This costs $2,000+ per pilot per year. Most budget Fethiye paragliding operators don't require SIV at all.
FAI & IPPI Compliance
The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) sets global standards for air sports. SkyHigh pilots carry IPPI Cards (International Pilot Proficiency Information) at Stage 5 — the highest tandem rating. This means our pilots are qualified to fly commercially in any FAI-member country, not just Turkey.
Equipment: What You Fly With
Tandem Wings (Paragliders)
We fly exclusively Ozone Magnum 3 and Gin Explorer 2 tandem wings — both certified to EN 926-1 and EN 926-2 standards (the European norm for paraglider airworthiness). These wings are designed specifically for tandem operation with a combined pilot+passenger weight range of 100–220kg.
Every wing is replaced after 300 flight hours or 12 months — whichever comes first. Between replacements, wings undergo monthly line-length checks and porosity testing. For context: some Ölüdeniz operators fly wings that are 3–4 years old and well past their manufacturer's recommended service life.
Harnesses & Reserve Parachutes
All passengers fly in Gin Genie Race 4 tandem harnesses with integrated Cygnus airbag back protection. In the rare event of a hard landing, the airbag absorbs impact energy — similar to how a car airbag works.
Every harness is equipped with a Gin One-G reserve parachute (EN 12491 certified). Our pilots are trained to deploy the reserve within 3 seconds. Reserves are professionally repacked by a certified rigger every 6 months, and the repack date is logged and available for inspection.
Maritime Safety
Because Ölüdeniz paragliding routes pass over the Blue Lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea, every pilot and passenger wears an automatic CO2 life vest (EN ISO 12402 certified). If you land in water (extremely rare but possible in emergency scenarios), the vest inflates automatically on contact.

Weather Decision Protocol
Weather is the single most important safety variable in Babadağ paragliding. We use a systematic go/no-go protocol based on live data from three sources:
Babadağ 1700m Anemometer
Live wind speed and direction data from the main takeoff zone. If crosswinds exceed 15 km/h or gusts exceed 25 km/h, all flights are grounded regardless of conditions at sea level.
METAR/TAF Aviation Forecast
We pull the official aviation weather forecast (METAR) for the Dalaman Airport (DLM) region, which covers the entire Muğla/Fethiye coastline. Approaching fronts or thunderstorm warnings trigger automatic cancellation.
Wind Type Analysis
The local "Lodos" (south-west wind) and "Poyraz" (north-east wind) have very different effects. Lodos can bring sudden gusts at the Babadağ peaks. We cancel if Lodos is forecasted above 15-20km/h before pilots even leave the city.
If a flight is cancelled due to weather, you receive a full refund or free rescheduling — your choice. See our FAQ for more common questions about weather and cancellation.
